Echo Reading
Goal
Students will increase passage reading fluency and accuracy.
Materials
- Paragraph at the student’s instructional level
Teacher Steps: Describe It
- You or a student reads the first phrase or sentence from the paragraph. The other student reads the same material.
- Continue this procedure to the end of the paragraph. Then, switch roles.
- The other student reads, and you or another student rereads until the end of the paragraph.
- Students place these stories in their fluency kits.
Student Steps: Do It
Classwide
- Tell all students, “Remove the paragraph from your fluency kits for Echo Reading.”
- Say, “I will read the first phrase or sentence, and you repeat it after me.” Students reread the same material. This procedure continues until you reach the end of the paragraph.
In pairs
- Partner One reads the first phrase or sentence.
- Partner Two reads the same material.
- Continue this procedure until the paragraph is read.
- Students switch roles.
