How practitioners provide intervention opportunities and experiences for parents is critical and determines the success of the interventions used. (Bandura & Locke, 2003; Dunst, Hamby, & Brookfield, 2007; Dunst & Trivette, 2009)

Practices and characteristics that promote positive relationships with the parent:

#### Operational Definition of Coaching
An adult learning strategy in which the coach promotes the learner’s ability to reflect on his or her actions as a means to determine the effectiveness of an action or practice and develop a plan for refinement and use of the action in immediate and future situations. (Rush & Shelden, 2004)

#### Coaching as Capacity-Building
The more the person’s capacity has been built (i.e., increased confidence and competence), the better the person becomes at more independently achieving his/her desired outcomes now and in the future. The benefits of a capacity-building process are acquisition and use of new knowledge and skills as well as self-attribution related to his/her role in realizing the intended effects. (Wilson, Holbert, & Sexton, 2006)

Build upon and provide supports and resources to assist family members and caregivers to enhance children’s learning and development through everyday learning opportunities.

#### Natural Learning Environment Practices
Coaching caregivers on how (responsive strategies) to support child participation in real-life routines and activity settings and understanding the importance of and knowing how (responsive strategies) to identify and use child interests as a primary means of inviting, enhancing, and expanding child participation (engagement).
