Strategies for

Engaging Parents

(Not Children!)

during Tele ‐Intervention Dana Childress, PhD Coffee Chats with Brookes May 6, 2020

Webinar Tips

  1. Close any applications that use bandwidth or resources on your device.
  2. To submit a question, click “Questions” in the webinar panel and type in your question.
  3. To minimize the webinar panel, click the orange arrow in the upper left of the panel.
  4. If you experience computer audio issues, you can switch to “Phone call” in the “Audio” section of the webinar panel and use the dial‐in information provided.

You are not trying to engage an infant or

toddler on video for 45‐60 minutes during

your virtual visit.

Instead, focus your energy on the parent.

BEFORE the Visit

✓ Prepare with the parent by scheduling a pre‐visit tech check and discussing (or showing!) what to expect.
✓ Prepare yourself (but put your bubbles away).
✓ Plan for what to do/see during the visit…then go with the flow.

DURING the Visit

✓ Check‐in first.
✓ Use your voice to join in (rather than your body).
✓ Keep your focus on the parent who facilitates learning for the child.

DURING the Visit

✓ Observe by using the “show me” prompt & asking the** parent to take you along.
✓ Be descriptive and specific in your guidance and feedback.
✓ Breath and stay calm through the tech hiccups.
✓ Be flexible.
