SECTION/COMPONENT What's new and improved?
Section I, People Who Require Augmentative and Alternative Communication (Chapters 1-4) Formerly “Introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication.” New title reflects the 5th edition's increased emphasis on understanding the diverse characteristics and needs of people who rely on AAC. Chapters 1-3 address fundamental questions: Who relies on AAC and why? What processes are involved in assessment and intervention? What essential principles should practitioners understand? NEW Chapter 4 focuses on working effectively with families and other communication partners.
NEW Section II, Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (Chapters 5-8) NEW book section incorporating content previously housed under "Introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication." After being introduced to the foundations of AAC in Section I, students now delve into the specifics of how AAC systems work to meet the needs of people who rely on them. Topics addressed include how to select the vocabulary and messages included in an AAC system; how concepts can be represented and physically organized; and options for access techniques and output. NEW Chapter 8 walks students through the step-by-step process of selecting an AAC system for an individual and personalizing it to meet the individual's needs. Two extended case studies illustrate what the process looks like for a child and for an adult.
Section III, Augmentative and Alternative Communication Interventions for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities (Chapters 9-13) Chapter 9 includes expanded content on individuals with ASD. Chapter 13, previously focused on educational inclusion, has been heavily revised to cover a broader range of issues across the life span, including employment, assisted and independent living, health care, and community participation.
Section IV, Augmentative and Alternative Communication Interventions for Individuals with Acquired Disabilities (Chapters 14-18) Chapter 18, which previously focused on AAC in intensive, acute, and long-term acute medical settings, has been heavily revised to emphasize patient-provider communication.
