Preverbal communication and engagement between children and their caregivers build an essential foundation for language and learning—but many children with disabilities and their families struggle to connect early in life and need support developing early communication skills. This coffee chat will uncover the importance of early communication prior to first words, plus strategies for supporting young children with disabilities and their families in this essential development. Led by the authors of the new book **Building Preverbal Communication & Engagement,** this presentation introduces attendees to the evidence-based Triadic Gaze Intervention (TGI) and how to use it to support children with disabilities and their families.

Participants will:

- Apply an effective protocol for facilitating early, preverbal signals of communication and engagement
- Embed opportunities for communication and engagement into families’ everyday activities and routines
- Tailor intervention strategies for individual children with a range of disabilities
- Help children make progress toward IFSP goals related to communication and engagement
